Prayer for Surrender / Dying to Self

January 17, 2024 by David and Robin Watters

Matt 14:16-18  But Jesus said, “That isn’t necessary—you feed them.” But we have only five loaves of bread and two fish!” they answered,” “Bring them here,” he said.

I pray for _______ today that he/she will be willing to give what they have to you to use for your work. Just like the boy who shared his lunch to feed 5000, may _________ be willing to give you their life and whatever they have, for you to use and multiply. May they believe no gift is too small, no ability is too little. You will take the smallest thing and use it to do great things. May you use _______ to do something great today.

My Utmost Jan 16

As long as I consider my personal temperament and think about what I am fitted for, I shall never hear the call of God. The majority of us have no ear for anything but ourselves, we cannot hear a thing God says. To be brought into the zone of the call of God is to be profoundly altered.

Matt 16:22-25 And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, “Far be it from you, Lord! This shall never happen to you.” 23 But he turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me. For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.” 24If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 25 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.

This morning I acknowledge that you are the source of righteousness. Your cherished ambition was to be seen and heard and loved in those you created. The only way that is possible is by you behaving in and through us. You as the source, the origin of your own image. As Oswald Chambers said, I pray that _______________ will not be looking at his/her fitness to do God’s work today, but be considering the source. As Ian Thomas said, Every step you take, every attitude you adopt, every decision you make, everything you do, and all you hope to be, is either in dependence upon God… or else a byproduct of the enemy (a mind set on the things of the flesh—Rom 8:5). Jesus made that clear with Peter in Matt 16:23. Peter thought he was seeking God’s interests, but Jesus could see his heart. May ________________ truly be seeking God’s interests today.

Matt 16:24 If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself

I pray ____________ will choose to deny him/herself today. The devil’s lies can be so subtle, as Peter found. The difference between a Godly mind and a carnal mind is how much we relate the situation to God. The carnal mind is thinking godlessly, lightlessly, without relating the situation to God. To be a carnal Christian is still to claim the right to exercise your own jurisdiction, make your own decisions and plans, choose your own pathway. But you will be useless to God.” I pray instead that ____________ will choose to live Godly, where the source of what he/she does today will be God Himself working through them.
