Verses for the day
- Ps 42:1-2 As the deer longs for streams of water, so I long for you, O God. I thirst for God, the living God. When can I go and stand before him?
- John 7:37 “Anyone who is thirsty may come to me! Anyone who believes in me may come and drink!
Thoughts
How’s your spiritual life today? Is it vibrant and strong? Would you describe it like Psalm 1:3, like a tree planted along the riverbank, green, and full of fruit? Or is more like a weary traveler, dirty and weary from his journey and desperate for a drink of cold water to quench his thirst?
There are definitely days that I feel more like the latter. worn down and beaten up. But then, each morning, when I take the time to slow down in my reading, and even to stop and listen, and to “drink” from Him, I am refreshed.
In Psalm 42:1 David begins by saying, “I thirst for God like a deer longs for streams of water.” I have come to look forward to and even long for these times with the Father each day. I don’t always write what He is speaking to me about, but almost every day, I go to the well of living water, and I find refreshment there. Jesus said in John 7:37, “Anyone who is thirsty, let him come and drink of me.” Jesus said, for those who are thirsty, let them come and drink.
David asked the question twice in Psalm 42:5, 11, “Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart sad?” Then he answers his own question, “I will put my hope in God! I will praise Him again.” When we are dry and weary from the journey, we need to go to Him, put our hope in Him, and remember what He has done! Put your hope in Him! Choose to praise Him… and your heart will be satisfied.
Ps 42:8 But each day the LORD pours his unfailing love upon me, and through each night I sing his songs, praying to God who gives me life.
Each day… how does David receive that each day? It’s because he intentionally goes to the well. He drinks from the living water, every day. As He drinks, He is reminded of God’s unfailing love. But, that only happens when we go and take a drink.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, may this become a deep ingrained habit.. going to the well of living water every day. The well is deep and will never run dry, and its full of refreshing water. When I am discouraged, when I am weary from the journey, remind me there is refreshing water waiting for me when I go and drink.
I pray for my children today, that you will make them thirsty for you. That they will long for you like David describes in Psalm 42:1. That they will continue to develop the habit of going to the well every day to find that cold, refreshing water that will refresh their soul. And Father, when they open your Word, would you meet them there. May they hear from you when they open it and begin to drink.
Thank you that we have the source of living water abiding within us… the Holy Spirit whom you put there to guide us into truth (John 14:17; John 16:13 ) and to remind us of all the things you have already taught us in the past. (John 14:26) He is the source of this living water (John 7:39)
