Reading: 1 Samuel 23; Psalm 31; Psalm 54
Key Verse: Psalm 54:3 “You are my rock and my fortress. For the honor of your name, lead me out of this danger.”
Personal Reflection:
Lately, I’ve found myself lying awake at night—mulling over hard conversations, broken relationships, and the weight of shepherding those who are hurting. I feel the ache of not being able to fix what’s broken. But then I think of David in 1 Samuel 23. He had escaped Saul’s pursuit nine, ten, maybe eleven times. The pressure was relentless. And yet, in the midst of it, David calls God his Rock and Fortress. He praises God’s good name. How did he do it?
Scripture Insight:
David had just welcomed Abiathar, the lone survivor of Saul’s massacre of 85 priests and their families. Still grieving, David hears of Keliah under attack. He seeks God’s guidance, and despite his men’s fear, obeys. After the victory, he learns Saul is coming. Again, he asks God if Keliah will betray him. God says yes—so David flees.
Saul hunted David daily, but “God did not give David into his hands” (v.14). When the people of Ziph betrayed him, Saul pursued again. Cornered on one side of the mountain, David was moments from capture—until God intervened. A message of war pulled Saul away. David named that place “the Rock of Escape.”
And in the middle of it all, Jonathan came and “strengthened his hand in God” (v.16–18). What a gift.
Application:
- Seek God’s voice before reacting.
- Trust His protection even when pressure mounts.
- Encourage others in God’s promises.
- Name your “Rock of Escape”—a place where God met you.
Prayer:
Lord, You are my Rock of Escape. When I feel cornered and overwhelmed, remind me that You are near. Lead me out of danger—for the honor of Your name. Strengthen my heart in You.
Reflection Questions:
- Where do you feel surrounded or stuck right now?
- Are you seeking God’s voice or reacting from fear?
- Who might need a “Jonathan moment” from you today?
- What place or moment in your life could you name “Rock of Escape”?
