Fervent Prayer and the Long Road of Obedience

November 2, 2025 by David and Robin Watters

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Prayer has always been the weakest discipline of my Christian life—and it continues to be. This week, during the Global Partners Leadership workshop, I’ve been challenged again to grow in this area. James 5:16 reminds us, “The fervent prayer of the righteous accomplishes much.” I do spend time in prayer. I pray with my wife almost daily, and we pray as leaders at the start of most days. But what does “fervent” prayer really look like?

David’s example in 2 Samuel 2 offers a glimpse. After years of running, Saul is finally gone. David has just composed a funeral song for Saul and Jonathan and commanded it be taught throughout Judah. Now, he wonders if it’s time to return from his stronghold. So he does what seems to be a regular habit—he asks the Lord.

Title: Fervent Prayer and the Long Road of Obedience

Reading: 2 Samuel 2; Psalm 140

Key Verse: 2 Samuel 2:1 — “After this, David asked the LORD, ‘Should I move back to one of the towns of Judah?’ ‘Yes,’ the LORD replied.”

Scripture Insight:

David didn’t consult his men. Twice before (1 Sam 24:4; 26:8), they had interpreted circumstances through their own lens. David had learned to seek God first.

But God’s answer didn’t lead to ease.

  • Abner appointed Saul’s son as king (2 Sam 2:8–9).
  • A fierce battle followed (v.17).
  • Nineteen of David’s men died, and a long war began (2 Sam 3:1).

God’s direction led David into deeper dependence. This was God’s discipleship program—training David to lead through conflict, not around it. Psalm 140 reflects David’s heart in these moments:

“You are my God… Listen to my cries for mercy… You protected me on the day of battle” (vv.6–8).

He trusted God’s justice and rested in His name:

“I know the LORD will help those they persecute… Surely righteous people are praising your name” (vv.12–13).

Application:

  • Pray first—seek God’s direction.
  • Don’t equate God’s guidance with comfort.
  • Believe in His love.
  • Rest in the power of His name.

Prayer:

Lord, teach me to pray with fervency and faith. Help me trust Your direction, even when the road is long. Let me rest in Your love and lead with courage.

Reflection Questions:

  • What does fervent prayer look like in your life right now?
  • Are you expecting ease from obedience?
  • How is God using difficulty to disciple you?
  • Where do you need to rest in His name today?
