Reading: Psalm 96; Isaiah 35
Key Verse: Isaiah 35:3 — “With this news, strengthen those who have tired hands, and encourage those who have weak knees.”
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Do you have tired hands? Do you feel like your knees may just give out if things continue going as they are? I have had times since taking this role that I have had “tired hands,” and “weak knees.” Both are vivid pictures of discouragement.
- Weak hands represent the inability to carry out tasks—whether daily labor or spiritual obedience. They reflect discouragement, when our efforts feel futile. In the past 6 months I have had this feeling often.
- Feeble knees are the picture of fear and collapse under pressure. In Hebrew the idiom, “knees giving way” points to terror or loss of confidence. There has been times in this role when the decisions we have made has produced negative pushback or disagreement. Those times can easily produce the feeling of questioning whether we have done the right thing, and can create loss of confidence and doubt .
Scripture Insight:
Psalm 96 lifts our eyes from weakness to God’s greatness:
- “Sing to the LORD; praise his name. Each day proclaim the good news that he saves” (Psalm 96:2–3).
- “The LORD made the heavens” (Psalm 96:5).
- “The LORD reigns! The world stands firm and cannot be shaken” (Psalm 96:10).
In Isaiah 35 God paints a picture of hope for his people when they were discouraged. Isaiah uses these words to “Strengthen those who have tired hands, encourage those who have weak knees” (Isaiah 35:3
- “The deserts will become green… the LORD will display his glory” (Isaiah 35:2).
- “Say to those with fearful hearts, ‘Be strong, do not fear, your God is coming to save you’” (Isaiah 35:4).
- Healing and joy will overflow—eyes opened, ears unstopped, the lame leaping, the mute singing, and streams flowing in the wasteland (Isaiah 35:5–6).
God’s glory and salvation are the antidote to tired hands and weak knees. He reigns, He saves, He restores. His Kingdom WILL come, and we win in the end!
Application:
- When your hands feel weak, remember: “The LORD made the heavens” (Psalm 96:5). He is strong where you are not.
- When your knees feel feeble, remember He will take this desert land and make it green pastures (Isaiah 35:2) that will produce strength.
- Encourage others with this truth—our God reigns, and His glory renews weary hearts.
Prayer:
Lord, when my hands grow tired and my knees feel weak, remind me of Your strength and salvation. Lift my eyes to Your glory, steady my heart with Your promises, and help me encourage others with the good news that You reign.
Reflection Questions:
- Where do you feel your hands are tired or your knees are weak?
- How can Psalm 96 broaden your perspective to see God’s greatness?
- Who around you needs encouragement today from Isaiah 35:3–4?
