Please Pray for the Katukina Translation

February 10, 2009 by jerry_kennell

Gloria and I left Brazil in 2009, after she suffered what appeared to be a heart attack. It turned out that she had suffered a virus infection of her heart lining that imitated the symptoms of a heart attack. At the same time two fairly large skin cancers were found on her, and she had to have minor surgery to have them removed. Because of these and other problems, as well as the lack of adequate health care facilities where we were located, we decided to move to the USA and in fellowship with our field and home leadership we decided to begin an itinerant ministry here in the USA.

At present I am working on revising the Katukina Old Testament portions and New Testament, and translating the Katukina back into the Portuguese language so it can be checked on the field. Our son, Scott, who is working as a language and culture consultant on the field is able to travel from time to time to visit the tribal people and do a comprehension check on what I have translated/revised. At present I have completed all of the Old Testament portions to accompany our Chronological Bible teaching program, plus the books of Mark, Acts, Romans, Ephesians and I’m working on 1 Corinthians at present. It is a slow job, trying to be faithful to the Word of God, as well as make the Scriptures able to be understood by the native readers.

Gloria is volunteering at a convalescent home, and we both help out twice a month at a food pantry in a supporting church. I am one of the elders in our home church here in Aurora, IL, and am mentoring a fellow at the Wayside Cross Rescue Mission in downtown Aurora, once a week. Translation is a full-time job, but we are both thankful for other ministry opportunities the Lord brings our way.
