School Party (African Style)

December 22, 2012 by Joel and Andi

Friday was the party before the “winter” school break.  Although Christmas is not a huge holiday here, the schools still take a long break because of New Years and another traditional holiday that falls during this time.

Here are some of the things I noted from the morning…

  • Some things do actually start on time here
Becca's sad face when she found out they had missed the first song Ethan's class sang
Luckily they sang one more time
  • Santa Clause in Africa wears sunglasses with his Santa Suit
  • Ethan thinks that rolling tires is an official sport
Ethan says it is his favorite sport

And couldn't wait to show his brother how it is done
  • Humor is very cultural.  I had no idea was was so funny about the sketches performed, but everyone else thought they were funny.
  • It is never hard to pick out my children in a crowd here
Yet even though he sticks out, he is still feeling at home here

We are so proud of the progress he has made. His French accent makes me jealous 🙂
  • Ethan couldn’t have been prouder to show off his school to Grandma, Grandpa and Aunt Becca
Ethan was glowing the whole morning

And so were we, it is just so great to have family here!

Hi and Merry Christmas to all of you.
Christmas is over here now (well almost) and I didn’t get to roll any tires but I sure had a good time with my family. I’m so happy that you had some of yours with you. Be Blessed my friends. I’ll look forward to your next posting. Carolyn

What a fun cultural experience. I am so glad Ethan is doing so well at school. I can’t wait to hear his cute French accent. I am jealous too! I’m so glad he had family there to show off everything to. How special!

Forgot to tell you, it’s those simple things like rolling the tire that so many kids enjoy the most. I’m learning more and more from my kids of ‘unknown’ activities they did that were, of course, fun but some scarry!! Boys–river and farm–what a combination!

So much fun to see Ethan’s involvement and enjoyment in school and activities. I’m sure this is a special time with family and Katie to share your experiences. Have a wonderful Christmas together. You are missed but we all know you are doing God’s will for you. You are handling the challenges with grace.
