Momentum Returns

May 12, 2020 by Joel Potter

Support Update (Good News!)

I want to share an inspiring analogy here about how things are going for us, but I don’t think that it’s needed. What is needed is being provided! We’ve been praying throughout the slow-down we’ve all been in and are still walking through, that God would resume His work in the hearts of people in our community when it came partnering with the Potter’s in our mission. And the reality is, God didn’t ever stop working. So, He never needed to resume ANYTHING. We were the ones who needed to resume trusting His timing.

Without using any more extra words, we’re excited to share that another three (maybe four) families have come on board in the last few weeks and are helping us towards our monthly goal. So, that means that since we started this stage of the journey back in late January, God’s added as many as nine new monthly partners! There’s still a little more detail needed and so we can’t say exactly what part of the goal has been reached, but whatever it will be, we are SO grateful for God’s work in our friends who have joined our team!

Medical Procedures Scheduled!

Another area we have been praying about was Bethany’s eye and veins. She was to have had a repeat of the PRK surgery on her left eye in early April but that had to be postponed due to the state’s requirements on elective surgery. We knew that meant more headaches and blurriness until it could take place. We’re thankful to report that she’s been scheduled to have the procedure late this week as the restriction on procedures like this one has been lifted. We’re grateful that the surgery center we’re using was able to fit Bethany into their schedule as they’re only doing this procedure on that single day for the indefinite future as they begin to resume normal operations.

And, another blessing is that we’ve been able to save up the funds for a procedure to help alleviate the poor blood circulation Bethany’s had in both legs for years. She has normalized life with a lot of pain, aches, and swelling and so to be able to have hope that she could be pain-free in both legs is sweet! She’s scheduled to have the procedure on both legs, with a week in between each leg, later this month and in early June.

Thank You for Praying For Us!

Thank you for EVERY time you ever pray for us. Taking time out of the flow of your day to ask God to meet our needs, to encourage our hearts, to strengthen us, is a beautiful gift for you to give!

To “tend a loved one in decline” - part 3 Fai To “tend a loved one in decline” - part 3

Faith becomes sight.

It’s not totally an accurate way to describe this moment, but it comes close. I think it’s intended to describe the moment when a Christ-follower passes from life on earth to life in the presence of God and the things held in faith no longer have to be believed in, but can simply be experienced with certainty.

For me, this is a lesser but similar moment. Today we settled Lynn into an assisted living facility that seems to have been sweet and perfect provision from God at just the right time. And after 11 full years, the moment was right. When we made the decision to invite Lynn to live full-time with us, it wasn’t just practical and economic as we looked at moving from Michigan to Florida. It was also a commitment to care. We saw a distant moment when we wouldn’t be able to care for her and would need to seek outside help. But like the frog who hangs out in the pot of water as it heats up, we had no idea how the increase in water temperature would affect us.

About five years ago, when Lynn had to give up working outside the home as well as driving, we entered the stage where the heat began to turn up. I want to unpack this more in another post but to keep it simple now we knew we were heading into a time in life where there would be some setting aside. And that meant we were exercising some faith that one day we might be able to pick up those things we were setting aside.

As the last five years passed and the cost of what we set aside grew, so did the hope that one day we would be relieved.

That day may have been today. But the sight looks like an empty seat at the dining table, the notification sound that makes me jump to help someone back in bed, the sudden space in life to do things like work a full day…but those things feel weird today.

This weekend, we celebrated some milestones. Both This weekend, we celebrated some milestones. Both my Dad and Lynn, Bethany’s Mom recently reached 75 years.

That’s a big deal, right?!

I didn’t know this at the time, but in the picture with “Mom” looking at the camera over the cupcakes, that was a long moment in which she and I held eye contact. I genuinely thought it was something special.

It turns out that this morning, we found what we think will be a safe, comfortable, home-like and loving assisted living facility where she is able to move in very soon. This is one of the biggest answers to prayer in recent years for our family. Caring for her for the last 11 years, even though it hadn’t always been as hard as the last few, has cost us. The Lord enabled us to pay that cost but it has cost none the less.

That moment locking eyes with her means a lot though.

I have to also recognize the tender gift that my Dad has exercised as he and my Mom have cared so often for Lynn. His ability to gently draw her out on a walk in the neighborhood or to sit and sing a hymn with her, has blessed more than her.
