Fun Foto Friday #20

May 9, 2014 by John and Asmara Anyan

Здравствуйте!

That’s “hello” in Russian, in case you were wondering.

For our CLA Methodology class (CLA = Culture & Language Acquisition), we are split up into small groups and get the chance to practice different language learning methods. In our case, we practice by learning Russian! To start off our cultural experience, the missionary couple  that has been teaching us invited us for a traditional Russian dinner.

So what was so different about our cultural meal?

– The men and women sat on different sides of the table across from each other

– All the napkins were cut into fourths so everyone just got a single sheet of napkin paper

– You were served more and more food until you made it very clear that you don’t want any more (declining 3x should do it)

– There were no drinks served with dinner

Traditionally, women wear scarves over their heads... so Martha and I decided to join in (side note: Martha's awesome hair cut inspired me to chop off my hair)

Another Russian tradition: standing for prayer (another side note: not sure what Ben was doing while I took this picture, but he sure wasn’t praying like everyone else 🙂 )

We all thoroughly enjoyed our meal, the hospitality of our hosts, and all the amazing stories told over sipping hot Russian tea with milk…

Спасибо!

(Thank you)
