I never envisioned myself as a mother of boys.

I don’t remember ever climbing a tree as a child. My pets were bunnies and I wouldn’t even get close to anything with 6, 8, or no legs. I grew up with two sisters and one brother, who had to suffer as the minority in the family (dressing him up in ballet outfits was our favorite). I’m also quite the germaphobe and appreciate things neat and tidy. Needless to say, I didn’t quite know what to expect with a baby boy. Or two, for that matter.

But the Lord sure knew what I needed to grow and mature. I needed to LET IT GO (sing it out loud, I know you want to!). “IT” being the inner urge I have to control things and people around me. So God, in His grace and infinite wisdom, chose me to be the mother of two precious boys.

For this Fun Foto Friday, here are some things I never thought I would ever have to say in my life and that have gently forced me to let go of control and the fears that come with it:

1. “Please don’t put that dead worm in your mouth!”

— Letting go of the fear of unknown germs and bacteria and the horror visions of what could happen (but still not letting my kids eat dead worms).

2. “Can you hit that toy kitchen a little more quietly?”

— Letting go of the idea of my boys playing gently and quietly, sipping imaginary coffee with me… and celebrating that God has created boys to be boys.

Someone gave us a toy kitchen and that’s all the boys did with it: hit it with their swords.

3. “Oh, that’s a beautiful lizard tail!”

— Letting go of my fear of crawling critters (or severed body parts of crawling critters).

He really is holding a lizard tail (and Judah really is picking his nose). Apparently, there are lizards around here that “drop” their tail when someone tries to catch them. Weird.

4. “Let’s find more roly polys!”

— Letting go of the disgust I have with insects and embracing them as part of God’s creation (well, not literally embrace them…maybe mentally).

5. “Sure, you can pee on the tree”

— Letting go of the fear of how people may judge me as a mother.

6. “Spiderman is my favorite superhero, too!”

— Letting go of the idea that my boys will NOT succumb to the lure of pop culture and that we will NEVER spend way too much money for shirts and shoes just because there’s a superhero face on it. Been there, done that.

Although my sword fighting skills are improving daily, I’m not done learning what it means to be a mother of boys yet… so bring on the mud, the cars, and superman capes, the bugs, the scrapes, and the swords!
