#21 Community Development–Dental Clinics
Even a quick reading of Jesus’ life and ministry would make it apparent that he cared about people’s physical needs. It is our team’s intention to have the same attitude.
One of the pressing physical needs in this village is for dental care and treatment. Doctors show up from time to time, but no dentists, and a trip to town is hard to arrange and financially out-of-reach for most, not to mention the bills that would come afterwards.
About once a year our team brings in dentists from the States in order to organize a free clinic. We normally help over 100 people from our village and the surrounding areas. People who would otherwise not have this opportunity to take care of problems or alleviate pain.
The dental clinic may be just a week of the year, but we pack a lot into it. Our team is involved in set-up, working the front desk, cleaning tools, assisting the dentists, translating, cooking, and cleaning. We promote literacy by posting signs about dental care and passing out pamphlets in Nahuatl. We help educate people in the continued care of their teeth and pass out free toothbrushes and toothpaste.
Our volunteer dentists are amazing, giving selflessly of their vacation days and using their own money to travel in order to serve others. With their expertise they are meeting real needs and allowing us to clearly communicate the love of God to the Nahuatl.
