Ostmans – back in the Philippines

February 3, 2024 by Lance and Laura Ostman

Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities… for Christ’s sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong. from 2 Corinthians 12:10

Our arrival

Hello from our jungle home where everything has been very wet since our arrival.

In our previous updates, we mentioned Lance’s health and what the doctor said. Here we are in February and some of you are probably wondering what’s been happening since we left the States. We spent only a day and a half in Manila when we arrived in the Philippines late at night on the 14th of January. Then we were in town on our island for a week visiting friends and purchasing enough supplies to last us a couple of months.

Into the village

On Tuesday the 23rd the weather was good for two flights. One to bring us in and one for the rest of our supplies. We haven’t lived in our house since 2020 so there was a lot to do to settle in! For those who have kept up with us, you will remember that last year we lived in Ron and Michelle’s house since our house had major termite damage. More work was done after we left last year as our office floor had to be replaced due to poor construction materials and more termite damage.

So, upon our arrival, we found that our house was quite dirty and disorganized from all the construction that was done. And of course, it wouldn’t seem like home if we hadn’t heard some rats the first couple of nights. I think it was day three when one of our workers found a dead rat in a nest in the office ceiling! It was just starting to stink so we’re glad he found it and disposed of it quickly. (Check out the link below to a very good illustration about a dead rat.) So, all that to say it has taken us longer this time to settle in than usual. Does our “age” have anything to do with it?! Highly likely. We notice how our bodies ache after working around the house.

The weather

There was finally a break in the weather this morning and we had sunshine. It is so nice! There has been a lot of rain all around the island since we arrived. Davao, a big city in southern Mindanao, has had some major flooding. There were news reports of people being stranded on the second floor of their homes. Please pray with us for the water to subside.

Checking translation

The Lord willing on Monday, Lance and his translation assistant will begin the initial check on Ezekiel 31-48 – the remaining chapters that still need to go through the initial check. Please pray for them – for wisdom, clarity, and stamina. Later this month we anticipate doing the final check on Ecclesiastes and the hope is to finish that and Jeremiah before we leave in May. Please pray for the health of our main translation assistant as he’s had some significant health issues.

Thank you

Thank you for praying for us and the work here. To say that we appreciate all of you who pray and those who give financially is an understatement. Please let us know how we can pray for you.

Secure in Christ’s love,

Lance and Laura
