MARY’S BELT

April 8, 2011 by Phil and Elin Henderson

The Mwinika people call a rainbow “mudhako wa Mariya” and it means “Mary’s belt.” I assume there is some Catholic connection but all the Mwinika know it by that term whether they are Catholic or not. This morning I went outside and saw this rainbow. It struck me that this was the first rainbow I have seen since we taught on its significance from the story of Noah a couple of weeks ago. After teaching that lesson I talked to a few people about it and they had never heard that the rainbow was God’s promise not to send a worldwide flood again. I can’t help but wonder if some of the others in the village looked at this rainbow and, for the first time in their lives, understood it’s true significance.
