One of the projects Phil gives his translation helpers when they are not busy is the job of transcribing and checking old recordings that he made while in language study. Our goal is that these recordings will produce a basis for a lexicon and eventually a dictionary in the Mwinika language. This week, while one of them was checking old recordings, he came across a recording that he himself had made. Years ago Phil had asked him what a person needed to do to be accepted by God and he had given a text listing things like “pray several times a day, fast, give to the poor, etc.” As he sat there listening to himself expound on things that he no longer believes he came to Phil laughing and saying, “I am checking these old recordings I gave you. I didn’t know the truth back then. I can’t believe you didn’t stop me! You just kept asking me more and more questions and each time I answered the worse it got. And to think, the whole time you knew that what I was saying wasn’t true.” We talked for a bit about those old recordings and how far we have come since the language learning days. We talked to about how important it was that they hear God’s truth directly from God’s word. There was a lot of things I could have said back then but it would just have been my opinion. After hearing the truth of God’s word he is able to see clearly how far his belief system has changed in the last few years.
