After five hours of being bounced up and down in the 30 ft. out-riggered canoe, on the rough Pacific ocean, taking turns getting soaked from the highest and strongest waves, they were glad to be on dry land once again. Rocky, along with our pilot and two language school students, were on their way to visit the Agta tribal people, living on the East Coast of Northern Luzon.
The Agta tribal folk, are an amazing group of people, living in the jungle and surviving on what is presently available. Hunting for birds, wild boar or deer, and catching various kinds of fish in the nearby ocean is part of the their daily routine.
Late one afternoon during their 5 day visit with the Agtas, when Rocky was down by the beach he witnessed a couple walking out of the bush, carrying everything they owned in their arms. After swiftly choosing a site to build their new home, they simultaneously went to work; the wife built a fire and started cooking supper; the husband started building their home – they finished at the same time!!
Realizing that this nomadic group had never had the opportunity to hear of God’s love for them, John Burbidge moved into this remote area several months ago. Spending hours each day with the tribal people in their various small cluster of houses has resulted in John making great progress in learning their culture and language as well as making friends with the people in this area.
Having an airstrip in this secluded terrain where John is serving would be a tremendous blessing for the work. Hours of time would be saved when traveling in and out of the station as well as making it more convenient for getting needed supplies into this isolated locality. During this trip our pilot was able to locate a suitable spot for this project.
It is always exciting and encouraging to be with our language school students as they visit the needy tribal areas, looking for the place where God would have them locate. We’re praying and trusting for a couple of families to join John in this challenging, yet exciting job of seeing a church established among the 1,500 Agtas.
