No, I still don’t know which people group I will be working with in West Africa. But over the next several months I would like to introduce you to different West African people groups who need missionaries to share the good news of Jesus Christ with them. Though I won’t be working with all of them, they could all use our prayers. Each one represents hundreds or thousands of people who have never had the opportunity to hear the gospel in their own language before. . .
The BOLON People
Demographics: There are 18,000-26,000 Bolon people who live in 12 villages in western Burkina Faso. They speak the Bolon language, which has never been written down.
Religious Beliefs: There are less than 15 Bolon people who claim to be Christians. There is no Bolon-speaking church, so these 15 individuals attend church in a different language. There are no missionaries currently working with the Bolon people. Ninety percent of the Bolon are said to be of a major world religion. The Bolon are also animists, fearing and trying to manipulate spirits. They believe that the supreme god is too high to be reached and that they can only connect to him through the spirits.
Occupation: The Bolon are mainly subsistance farmers, meaning that they grow the food they eat. They grow staple foods such as sorghum and millet as well as other crops. They also have a few cattle and supplement their diet through hunting, fishing, and gathering wild plants.
Family Life: The Bolon often live with their extended families in rectangular houses with mud walls and beaten-earth roofs. Men often have more than one wife.
Prayer Needs: Please pray that God would send missionaries to the Bolon. Pray that the Bolon people would seek the truth. Pray that missionaries would translate the Bible into the Bolon language. Pray that the Christians who live near the Bolon would learn the Bolon language in order to share the gospel with them.
