This month Katie Moore, our fearless and brilliant field literacy consultant is “holed up” in a mission apartment along with four other members of an important team who are working very hard to produce much needed literacy materials for the Guarijio church planting team. This special group is made up of the missionaries who work among the Guarijio, Vicente and Erendira and some of Vicente’s family members. Vicente himself is a Guarijio man and of course his family members are Guarijio as well so they are an excellent resource to help spur on this important process. Katie is helping this group work hard for this whole month in order to make, Lord willing, huge amounts of progress because each of them has come into the city in order to make the most of this time and Katie’s presence to help them. Ordinarily what they are trying to accomplish this month would take much longer if they were doing it from the tribe and long distance from their literacy consultant.
While Katie is in the city she will also be providing a literacy workshop for our new missionaries on the field who are currently in national language and culture study and preparing to head out to work among an indigenous group. Exciting!
On why we value literacy as a mission and as a field, Katie writes, “Because personal access to the truth of the Word of God is vital to the maturity of believers, we are persuaded that literacy is one of the keystones of planting a church. God’s Word is where man finds the truth that leads to eternal life, his new identity as a child of God, and the encouragement and exhortation that lead to growth. The Bible confirms it’s own importance- it is light, treasure, wisdom, and life. It is the authority of the Church, and without it the people of God will inevitably flounder. God has decreed that His message is for everyone, and in His wisdom, He chose to preserve His truth in written form. It follows, therefore, that the Word requires readers. A mature church will have the unchanging Word of God as their foundation, not poorly remembered, second-hand information.”
Please be praying for Katie as she works with our Guarijio team. Pray for our Guarijio team, as well as the growing Guarijio church. Pray that the literacy resources produced this month will greatly aid the Guarijio ministry in teaching people to read so they can go for themselves to the word of LIFE!
