During the month of October I was able to start a t-shirt quilt, ride on a combine, and visit some local churches in the Sioux City area. I also had the opportunity to help in childcare for a week at the Ethnos360 Training Center in Missouri and was able to have dinner with quite a few of my classmates from my time in missionary training.
I have spent several days of the month of October with Alice who has been helping me with a project I have wanted to complete for two years now. My t-shirt quilt has been challenging to work on, but also a nice break to work on something physical while spending time with an amazing lady. I also got to take a ride in her family’s combine and see how corn in Iowa is harvested.
I was also to visit Morningside Bible Church during the month of October. It was really good to reconnect with that church and the people there as it is one of the churches I grew up in while on furloughs (a time when a missionary family comes back to the country where they are originally from, for a break).
I was given the opportunity to help with childcare at the Ethnos360 Training Center in Roach Missouri the first full week of November. The students of the training center were going through an intensive class that required their children to be in childcare longer hours than usual. I was so glad to be able to fill in those extra hours and care for the student’s kids. While I was at the training center I was able to see some familiar faces of staff which was an encouragement for me.
I stopped by Kanas City on my way to Roach, Missouri
to see my former roommates and was able to see all but nine of my classmates (from my time at the Training Center). We all had dinner together and caught up with where each of us were in going into full time ministry.
Looking forward…
I got tickets to visit PNG! I am very thankful that the Lord has provided me a family that loves and pushes me towards the Lord. Because of this, I deeply miss them when we are apart for years on end. I thank the Lord that my parents and I have planned a trip for me to visit my family’s current home in Papua New Guinea around Christmas time! While I am there, I will also be able to visit the tribe that I grew up in. This was made possible due to a generous donor and I was able to purchase tickets for my trip from December to January.
While I am looking forward to this, I am also still thinking of everything I have to do before then. I am recognizing that my time in the United States, before the new year arrives, is very limited and I am doing my best to delegate my time well so I can achieve everything I need to do.
“When I had graduated high school I had the opportunity to go to a transitions course that helped with adapting into the American culture. They brough in a police officer to teach about how the police operate and how to respond to a police officer. That was super helpful as law enforcement looks and behaves differently especially in third-world countries. I remember hearing a story about one kid who got pulled over when they were speeding and they handed the police officer money when the officer came to the window and then drove away. That was what you were supposed to do where the kid grew up, but not in the USA!”

If I have not had the opportunity to meet you or interact with you, welcome! My name is Avalon Luse and I am serving with Ethnos360 as a part of MK Care, which serves missionary kids and their families so that the gospel can go out to all people.
I grew up as a missionary kid overseas in Papua New Guinea. Starting when I was one-year old until I graduated high school when I was nineteen. This experience gave me a passion for missions and a heart for missionary kids. If you are interested in more of my story checkout my website using the QR code in the connect with me section.
