No sleeping in today. Sundays are my day to get up the with the kids and make them breakfast (Maggie’s day is Saturday), and so I was up with the son. . .s and daughters and we had waffles for breakfast. Nate and I got together for prayer at 8:45 and then 9:30 was church time. It’s just us and the Claasens for church right now and I hope the pleasing-ness of our praise to our Heavenly Father is not dependent on the loveliness of our voices. We’re teaching through the Building on Firm Foundations course 1 with our kids right now and we did the tower of Babel today. Us guys on the team are taking turns teaching and Nate taught today. After church we do AWANA . . . sort of. We sing the AWANA song and then our kids say their verses they’ve been working on throughout the week. Lunch was carrots and leftover pizza and we ‘chilled’ for a little while. At 12:30 Nate and I headed to a nearby village to meet with the community about a couple of things. The community usually gathers on Sundays in this village and so if we have something we need to communicate with the whole community we’ll often go Sunday afternoons to talk with them. Today we talked about our next literacy class a little bit (mostly that if someone listed for the next class can’t go for some reason or another, they need to let us know ASAP), and we talked about medicine a bit. A box of medicine had been left with us by the nurse from the aid post over the hill, and we (as a community) needed to decide what to do with it. It is now staying in our hands and if people need medicine they can come see us.
After the gathering I took care of both our trashes (burn and slop bucket), and then hung out outside with the kids. We had supper (tacos) and then cleaned up and then I headed out again. I went to a nearby village (15 min hike the other direction from the day’s previous hike) and visited with the folks there for just a little over an hour. We took turns telling stories back and forth while drinking hot tea (that I had brought). The purpose of this time is two-fold for me – it’s good for building relationships with people, and it’s good practice speaking and listening in the Pal language. It was close to 9pm when I got home and so I showered (yes I do that from time to time) and got ready for bed. Maggie was in bed watching a movie and I joined her in time to catch the climatic finish. And. . . that was my day.
