Isn’t it crazy how time flies? Of our seven weeks studying Cherokee here in Tahlequah, only two remain… yet as I page through my database of Cherokee words and phrases, I start to understand where all the time has gone. We’ve accomplished much as a team, but several tasks still remain ahead of us! Here’s a summary of the goals we’ve set for the short amount of time left:
- Check back the rest of our 250 primary words. In other words, make sure we actually wrote what we heard! There are about 200 words left to check at this level, and each needs to be prepared before we test it out.
- Contrast all the Cherokee sounds we write. Make sure that sounds like ‘d’ and ‘t’ are actually separate in Cherokee. My rough guess is that we have 150-250 different comparisons we need to consider.
- Collect texts to help us analyze larger speech patterns. In this case, that means writing down stories Jerry tells us… then recording both an English version of the story, and a literal word-by-word translation to help us keep track of what means what.
- Wrap up loose ends in the individual areas of study we’re pursuing. For me that means investigating how to make negative statements, how to talk about something that is ongoing rather than completed, and how to make something a question or command instead of a statement.
That’s it for this week… check out our newsletter for a big-picture update, and we’ll look forward to letting you know how it goes next weekend!

Certainly not everyone would be able to do this work but Praise God you can and that you are! We are all equipped just right for the work God has for each of us.
Looking forward to seeing you all soon! Miss you and praying for you as you finish up Cherokee.
