What’s Your Name Again?

March 23, 2008 by

Manang Lusit

There are several ladies who we see almost on a daily basis.  They have nearly become part of our extended family.  Imagine our surprise, when Rebekah (our nine year old), kept getting their names mixed up!  After reminding her several times of what their real names were, we finally asked what was causing the confusion.  Rebekah exclaimed, "It’s so confusing when all their names start with ‘Manang’!"  ‘Manang’ is an Agutaynen term of respect that means ‘older sister’.  We refer to adults by this term, much as we would use ‘Mr.’ or ‘Mrs.’ in the States.  All of Rebekah’s confusion was alleviated when this term was defined for her.
