How does one learn a new language? There are many answers to this “simple” question, and numerous of books have been written on the subject. But one of the foundation blocks is to “show God’s love for the people”. This can be done in many ways. One way would be a “servant” to the people. Another would be to help with physical and medical needs. Another is to be with the people and do what they do.
So what does this have to with us? Our desire is to live for God’s glory and show His love for the Agutaynens . . . even before we can teach them God’s Word.
Fishing is part of daily life for the Agutaynens. They fish to feed their families, and they sell some if they are able. Very rarely has Stephen had the opportunity to participate in this aspect of the Agutaynens’ life. So when his friend, Boy, invited him to go fishing with him this week, he was glad for the chance to learn more and take part in Boy’s life.
Early in the morning, just before sunrise, Stephen went along with Boy to the sea. It was low tide, and there were many Agutaynens already there, collecting the fish that were trapped in tidal pools. Some used their bare hands, others had small nets. Boy had a net, and Stephen used his bare hands, asking before picking up the fish he didn’t recognize, in case their fins had spikes.
When they collected all the fish they could, Stephen returned with Boy to his house. After enjoying a breakfast of fish and rice with Boy’s family, Stephen recorded several stories about their morning together, which will aid him in his further language and culture study. He also received an invitation from Boy to fish again soon, using another method.
As fishing was an important part of the disciples’ lives (before they met Jesus), so fishing is critical for the survival and livelihood of many Agutaynens. Hopefully soon the Agutaynens will hear the Gospel message, and in turn, become fishers of men.
