Is It a Rag?

March 29, 2009 by

Manong Joseph`s Daughter

Often we will see a little boy wearing his sister’s shirt that no longer fits her. Sometimes adults wear clothes that are missing zippers or have many tears in them. We contribute this to their poorness. However, an Agutaynen friend recently gave us a little more insight.

Our daughter Abigail had thrown away an article of clothing that was not useable anymore, at least to us. However, our friend asked if she could have it for her daughter. She added that an Agutaynen would never (did we say never?), burn any piece of clothing, no matter how bad it might be. Do you know what happens to our garbage? It gets burned. She said they would rather hang old clothes on a rope and let it rot before they ever would burn it. It is said, “If you burn your clothes, you will not get more clothes, maybe.” Did notice the “maybe”? All of the Agutaynens’ beliefs are “maybe” or “might”. For example, if you take a bath on Friday, you might get sick. Our hearts still long for the day that the Agutaynens will cling to the Bible and stand on solid ground, that their faith will be grounded on truth and not a “maybe”.
