As I said in my last post, I’ve been to a lot of wedding festivities lately. At one of them, it was one of my good friends who was in charge of cooking for everyone. The festivities were on three different days, and on Sunday they cooked rice for everyone, which is a common food at big parties like this. They cook in huge pots like this one. Sometimes there are just a few big pots, sometimes more. This time there were 9 pots. And now here’s a math problem for you. I was told that with a certain kind of rice:
– You use 2 sacks of rice for 5 pots.
– Each sack of rice is 50 kilos.
– There are about 2.2 pounds per kilo. Knowing that, how much rice did they cook in the 9 pots?

Hi Susie – This is a great math question for elementary teachers especially (fun!) If we figured this correctly:
100 kilos = 5 pots
180 kilos = 9 pots
x 2.2 (pounds / kilo conversion)

396 pounds of rice !!
Next step — How many gallons of water was required to cook 396 pounds of rice?
