Sometimes it’s nice to have a boss

May 13, 2016

Sometimes it’s nice to have a boss. Or a director, like we have here. And sometimes it’s nice to actually see them in person, even if it takes a long, hot, and tiring 14 hours to get to their house. Yes, I know what some of you are thinking – you’d love to be that […]

What’s your name?

May 3, 2016

Recently I was in a village in my people group, and they were giving me some words and expressions in their language. One of them was “What is your name?” In their language it’s something like [vujisinindele]. But when we asked how you’d respond, they said that you could respond with the phrase, “My name […]

I bet you can guess

April 25, 2016

In my last post, I said that when I got back from my vacation I’d post a few pictures and then you’d know where I went. Well, here you go! If you can’t figure it out, I think that you’ll need to go back to history class. 🙂 Yes, Jen rode on him and I […]

17 Pitchers

April 4, 2016

It is now hot season here in My Country, which means that it is regularly in the 90s in my bedroom and I don’t even know how hot outside. (I know it’s a good day when it’s down to 93 when I go to bed, and it’s a not-so-good day when I come home in […]

You’d be proud of me

April 4, 2016

Those of you who know how much I enjoy driving would be proud of me. On Wednesday, Jen and I visited a village in our people group with a name longer than Oconomowoc or Mukwonago, and I drove the whole almost-four hour round trip on my moto. Aren’t you proud of me?!? The speedometer of […]

I stood in my living room, pouring the water out of the plastic “tea pot” to allow him to wash his hands before we shared a meal together. I had met him a while ago, but it was only recently that I actually started to get to know him, his family, and his people. As […]

Welcome to dusty season

January 29, 2016

The weather here has been beautiful lately. The only problem is the dust. Welcome to dusty season . . . Dusty season is when you have to wash your feet before going to bed because they are filthy since it has been an hour or two since you scrubbed them in the shower, (during which […]

West Africa – statistics

January 29, 2016

I just came across some statistics from a talk I heard a year or two ago by a local missionary about one of the countries here in West Africa: * In this country, only 20% of the people are Christian of any denomination. * This country is in the 10/40 window. * There are 84 […]

What IS discourse analysis?

January 2, 2016

A week before Christmas I took part in some discourse analysis training in Florida. But what exactly is discourse analysis? It’s kind of a hard thing to explain, since it talks about subconscious things that we do when we use language, so we don’t realize that we’re doing them. However, if someone doesn’t follow these […]

Swimming in the Dead Sea? Almost check.

January 2, 2016

Floating in the Dead Sea, where you can float without even trying, is amazing!! Ok, so I’ve never done it, but the last weekend of November I got to float in Pink Lake, a really salty lake in Senegal (and if you look at the picture below, you’ll see that from some angles it really […]
