Our Situation:
What’s the purpose of the moon? It has no light in itself. It’s a barren, lifeless, chunk of rock floating in space. And yet, it’s purpose is to bring light to us at night. But, the light it gives is not it’s own. It’s only a reflection of the real light, the sun.
What is God’s purpose for us? What is living as God intended?
The Passage: John 1:1-18
- What word pictures is God using to describe Jesus in this passage?
- How do those describe what Jesus was going to do?
- What application can you draw for how we should live our lives?
The Purpose:
John describes Jesus as the “Word” and the “light.” He then tell us that this “Word”, Jesus, became flesh. God was doing something different. He wasn’t going to just speak the words, He wanted to show His words!
In John 1:18 John reminds us that God is invisible (“No one has seen God at any time”) Then, John goes on to tell us this about Jesus: “The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him.” The Amplified Bible renders those last four words, “He has revealed Him and brought Him out where He can be seen; He has interpreted Him and He has made Him known” (John 1:18).
Jesus as God’s word in the flesh, the true light, came to make what is unseen (the glory of God) seen. Right here in the beginning of the narrative about Jesus, John tells us clearly that Jesus was here to reveal the Father. Jesus was the perfect man, here reveal the unseen God. To make what was invisible for centuries, visible. The very nature of God out in the open, in flesh and blood, for all the world to see, revealing what God is really like! Deity to be heard, seen, known, and loved through the man, Jesus!
The Plan:
In 1 John 4:12 John says, “No one has ever seen God, if we love one another, God abides in us…” and God is seen through our love.
Jesus is our example of living as God intended. We were created in His image. From the very beginning His plan was that we would display Him by how we live. That is living like God intended!
How well are you living as God intended? What is God challenging you to do as a result of these truths? What’s the first step?
I’m praying for you that you will give those who witness your life the picture of the moon by reflecting the SON.
