In Jula, the word “tulu” has a larger range of meaning than its English counterpart. In Jula, it means any kind of lotion, but it also means oil, including cooking oil, as well as the fat on meat. It appears that the same thing may be true in the language of My People. The other […]

The tinsel and lights are not up. The tree is not out of the suitcase yet. The presents are not wrapped. There is no snow on the ground. But at least I harvested the bananas so they’ll ripen for my parents when they come for Christmas, and I have a few mangos for an evening […]

I’m sorry to say that this update isn’t as upbeat as the last one about Rachida. In the last update I said that there was hope with the doctor in the other country. He said he’d do more chemo and some laser treatment, and added that he’d have her seeing in 6 months. Well, now […]

I have news on two fronts for Rachida, the little girl with retinoblastoma eye cancer! First of all, she is still in another country with her grandma. I called her grandma today, and she said that there they are doing chemotherapy again, then after that they have a laser that they’ll use to remove the […]

I thought you might enjoy some more pictures of my village. The internet is super slow today so I can’t figure out how to write captions with each one, but I figure you’d probably prefer to at least see the […]

My village. In my last e-mail, I was using made-up names for the different villages we were considering moving into, and now I don’t have to anymore! Let me tell you the real names of “Goofy” and “Bridge,” the two villages we were considering: “My village,” and “The village 3 miles away.” Yes, that means […]
